Helicopter & drone mustering in Gold Coast

Aerial mustering covers ground no horse, motorbike or ute can reach - and does in hours what a ground crew takes days to do. Helicopter mustering remains the backbone for cattle work; drone mustering is increasingly viable for sheep and smaller mobs. Hangrr connects you with operators across northern, central and outback Australia.

What to know

What to expect from helicopter & drone mustering

01

When aerial mustering pays off

Aerial wins on three station profiles. Remote country where a ground muster takes a week to cover what a helicopter covers in a day. Heavy timber / scrub where stock won't move on the ground without hours of riding. And first-of-season musters where stock are scattered across thousands of hectares and need to be located before they're moved. For tight paddocks with light cover, ground work is often cheaper and easier on stock - aerial pulls ahead as the country gets bigger and rougher.

02

Helicopter vs drone vs fixed-wing

Helicopter is the default for cattle - small turbine helicopters (R44, R66) work the country at low altitude, push stock, and respond to ground crew. Drone mustering works increasingly well for sheep and smaller cattle mobs in open country - quieter, lower cost, less stock stress, but slower per hectare and weather-sensitive. Fixed-wing spotter aircraft remain useful on huge stations for locating mobs before the helicopter starts on them.

03

Combining aerial and ground

Most station-scale musters combine aerial and ground. Helicopter locates and pushes; bike or horse crew at the yards or pinch points; helicopter cleans up stragglers. Brief the operator on your ground crew and they plan around the combined operation. Some operators bring their own ground crew as a package - declare in the bid.

04

Animal welfare and weather

Reputable operators muster with stock welfare in mind - they don't push at speed in heat, they manage shade and water access, and they communicate continuously with ground crew. Hot, dry, still conditions are the hardest on stock; operators flag and reschedule when welfare risk is too high.

Helicopter & drone mustering - frequently asked questions

How is helicopter mustering priced?+

Almost always per flight hour. Bids itemise per-hour rate, ferry time, and minimum-day charges - request quotes for real numbers against your station.

Can drones really muster cattle?+

For sheep and small-mob cattle in open paddocks, increasingly yes. For wild cattle in thick scrub, helicopter is still the only answer. Drone mustering is fastest-growing for sheep work in the southern half of Australia.

Do operators have low-level approvals?+

Mustering work happens routinely below 500 ft AGL. Operators carry the right CASA approvals and insurance for stock-mustering operations.

What about contract / season-long work?+

Many stations book mustering as a season contract - operators commit to specific weeks and price accordingly. Volume / multi-paddock work attracts a noticeable per-hour discount.
