What to know

What to expect from scenic flights

01

Where Australia's best scenic flights actually are

The big four for international visitors are the Great Barrier Reef (out of Cairns or the Whitsundays), Uluru and the Red Centre (out of Yulara or Alice Springs), the Sydney Harbour skyline, and the Twelve Apostles (out of Melbourne or Warrnambool). Lesser-known but spectacular: the Kimberley by floatplane out of Broome, the Tasmanian wilderness from Hobart or Strahan, the McKenzie Ranges south of Adelaide, and the Bungle Bungles from Kununurra.

02

How long scenic flights run

Reef and harbour flights are typically 30-60 minutes. Outback and Kimberley flights run 1.5-4 hours because the landscape is bigger. Helicopter scenic over a vineyard or a stretch of coast is usually 20-40 minutes. Some operators bundle a scenic flight with a remote lunch or beach landing - tell us if you want one and operators will bid the package.

03

Helicopter vs fixed-wing vs seaplane

Helicopters give the slowest, closest view and can land in places fixed-wing can't - vineyards, ovals, private property. Fixed-wing covers more ground per hour and is gentler on motion-sensitive passengers. Seaplanes (where they operate - Sydney, Cairns, Hobart) add the moment of landing on water, which is often the highlight of the trip.

04

Camera gear, kids and accessibility

Most scenic operators accommodate cameras up to professional bodies and standard zooms; gimbals and rigs need a heads-up. Children are usually welcome, with harness and weight rules per aircraft. For accessibility (mobility, hearing, vision), tell us in the request and operators with the right aircraft and ground support will bid.
